Liquid health drinks
are pasteurized (traditional or
flash) to prevent them from deteriorating and becoming rancid before
the product is opened and consumed. While this may seem like a good
idea, it causes some problems if not done correctly:
Flash pasteurization
is the process
of heating the liquid for approximately 15–30 seconds and then
immediately cooling it. By only briefly subjecting the acai to high
temperatures, most -- but not all -- taste and color changes are
avoided. Flash pasteurization is preferred to other methods because it
kills most microbes and destroys only some of the
beneficial phytonutrients found in acai.
When
Natural Home Cures conducted studies through an independent research
lab
in Calgary Alberta between the acai juice and the acai dry powder the
following results were found:
Diabetics: Acai juice is very rich in natural and man-made
added sugars. These sugars can have an
adverse reaction towards diabetics and those consuming diabetic
medication. Diabetics should use extreme
caution when consuming acai juice. On the other hand, acai in dry
powder form was found to cause no
adverse reactions.
Acai juice
blocks the effects of the body’s naturally produced histamines. These are essential
because they increase blood flow to injured or 'invaded' parts
of the body. Suppression of histamines can cause a major disruption in
essential metabolic responses and therefore caution should be used when
consuming acai juice.
In our study, we did not find evidence to suggest that acai powder
blocks naturally produced histamines.
In addition to the
problem
noted above,
greedy suppliers, brokers, and manufacturers
frequently stretch small amounts of genuine acai extract or powder into
dozens or even hundreds of liters of finished acai
liquid drink while reaping substantial and often obscene profits. The
taste
of your acai juice or drink could well be due to
other fruit juices, citric acid, sodium
benzoate,
and artificial flavors added during the manufacturing process of that
drink.
To
make matters
worse, most acai juice is reconstituted from acai concentrate back into
a liquid thereby destroying much of the inherent beneficial nature
of the fruit due to the pasteurization and manufacturing processes the
ingredients go through. Often flavors and preservatives are added to
allow the product to keep from spoiling for indefinite periods once
opened. Actual
milligrams of active ingredient -- the xanthones and anthocyanins
-- in a
whole bottle of acai "health" juice may be far
less than what the
average person would consume by eating 20 blueberries or blackberries
per day.
Manufacturers
that supply freeze-dried powder concentrate are
able to maintain the integrity of the original acai berry fruit.
Freeze-drying ensures the manufacturing process does not interfere with
the beneficial properties of the acai. it also side-steps the
destructive
pasteurization process needed for liquids to ensure they keep for long
periods.
It makes sense to use a product which is freeze-dried as it is light
and easy
to ship yet retains its beneficial properties.
This is
why we at Natural Home Cures do not recommend buying
any acai which comes in the liquid form. Instead, look for a
supplier that sells acai in powder or capsule form as it takes 12 or
more bottles of acai liquid to equal one 30-capsule bottle of acai
powder in terms of the active in active
ingredient -- anthocyanins.
It is not Natural
Home Cures' position to compete
over any current company that markets acai; if you are currently
consuming acai with success, please continue to use that company's
product. Below is a comparison between two well-recognized acai
suppliers and Natural Home Cures' acai. We simply want to give you the
knowledge to make an informed consumer-purchasing decision. We
have listed only the first letter of the companies names; Although,
with a
little research you will be able to quickly identify the companies.
