What Is Mangosteen?
Mangosteen (Garcinia Mangostana) is an exotic tropical fruit considered to be one of the finest tasting fruits in the world. The mangosteen has also earned the title "Queen of Fruits". Mangosteen grows on a tree found predominantly in Southeast Asia, in countries like Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. The mangosteen fruit itself is able to be harvested just 2 times each year, and consists of a thick, dark-purple, smooth rind (pericarp) on the outside, with 4 to 8 triangular segments of snow-white, soft flesh, on the inside. Mangosteen fruit has been used for thousands of years by millions of people worldwide to control pain, protect against disease, increase energy, as a natural anti-inflammatory, to reduce fever and for a whole host of other medicinal uses.

If The Mangosteen Fruit Is So Beneficial, Why Haven't I Heard Of It?
Mangosteen is an exotic fruit and is virtually unknown in North America because of its ultra-tropical growing conditions. One of the few places mangosteen does grow in North America is Hawaii, where it is extremely expensive. Occasionally, gift companies will ship frozen mangosteen in for use in exotic gift baskets; although, these companies charge a premium price for the fruit.

Unlike most fruits are harvested several times a year, mangosteen is available only 2 times each year: making it more expensive and more difficult to obtain than other fruit.

Can I Take Mangosteen While Taking Other Medication?
To date, we have not observed or had any reports of any drug-food interactions with mangosteen. I base my conclusion on the lack of any reported and documented drug-food interactions. And this is despite the hundreds of thousands of servings that have been consumed by our clients who (as a group) use an extremely wide variety of prescription drugs.

I encourage anyone currently using our product in conjunction with Coumadin to visit your doctor's office after using our mangosteen product for three days, and have a fingerprick check to make sure the Coumadin is working correctly.

Many consumers on Coumadin use the supplement safely, and I have never received a documented report of Coumadin problems where the supplement appeared as the likely culprit.

In addition, it is important to note some chemotherapy drugs depend on the production of free radicals to destroy tumors. The antioxidants in mangosteen could, theoretically, adversely affect these drugs by blocking free-radical formation.

However, because the benefits of mangosteen to chemotherapy patients, it would be unwise to simply trust the Oncologist's (cancer doctor's) memory on the mode of action of any individual chemotherapy drug. Either ask your pharmacist to look up the mode of action of your drug, or look it up yourself in the Physician's Desk Reference (on the Internet). My experience is the Oncologist will say:  "No, don't use it..." even if the mode of action of a chemotherapy drug has nothing to do with the production of free radicals. This is because, In most cases, they simply do not know what the mode of action is, short of looking it up themselves.

Additionally, many Oncologists mistakenly believe antioxidants stimulate cancer cell growth. This belief probably arises from the results of a single study which suggested a single low dose of vitamin C stimulated the growth of both normal and cancerous cells. Several subsequent studies proved that high regular doses of antioxidants actually suppressed cancerous cell growth. So, stand your ground in the face of possible Oncologist disapproval: ask them for proof of what they are telling you—don't accept it at face value!
