Mangosteen For Sinus Relief

Sinusitis, or sinus infection is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses and nasal passages which may be due to allergy, infection or autoimmune disorders. A sinus infection can lead to pressure in the eyes, nose, cheek area, or on one side of the head. It also causes the characteristic sinus headache. A person suffering from sinusitis may also have an accompanying cough, fever, halitosis (bad breath) and nasal congestion.

Sinusitis is categorized as acute when it lasts less than four weeks or occurs less than three times per year with each episode lasting about ten days; subacute when it lasts between four to eight weeks; and chronic when it lasts longer than eight weeks or occurs more than four times per year with symptoms lasting more than 20 days. Majority of cases are caused by viral infection and resolve over the course of ten days. It is a relatively common condition with over 24 million Americans affected annually.

The paranasal sinuses are moist, air-filled spaces, communicating with the nasal cavity, within the facial bones around the nose. The frontal sinuses are located superior to the eyes in the area near the eyebrows; the maxillary sinuses are the largest and located inside the cheekbones; the ethmoid sinuses are situated between the nose and the eyes; and the sphenoid sinuses sit behind the ethmoid sinuses. When people are in good health, these sinuses are filled with air, making the facial bones less dense and lighter in weight. Sinuses also play an important role in how voices sound.

Sinusitis Symptoms

Symptoms of sinusitis vary from person to person and each of the paranasal sinuses has distinct symptoms when they are infected or inflammed. While one person may show all of the symptoms, others may only have one or two of them. The most common symptoms include the following: a stuffy or runny nose; clear, thin nasal discharge (chronic sinusitis) or thick yellow or green nasal discharge (acute sinusitis); coughing and/or sneezing; pain over the bridge of the nose; headache that gets worse in the morning; fever and chills; pain in the eyes and face; bad breath; pain in the roof of the mouth or teeth; itchy eyes and nose; frequent throat clearing and reduced sense of smell and/or taste.
The less common symptoms may or may not be accompanied by a stuffy nose. They include sore throat and horse voice due to infected postnasal drip; swelling of the eye area as a result of the spread of infection from the sinuses; earache or a feeling of fullness inside the ear, tenderness and swelling behind the ear, and ear popping caused by mucus in the Eustachian tube.

Sinusitis Treatment

Conservative treatment for sinusitis involves the use of nasal irrigation, particularly with symptoms of the chronic type. Decongestant nasal sprays may also provide relief; however these medications must not be used for prolonged periods as they may lead to rebound sinusitis.

Pharmacologic treatment includes the use of antibiotics, antihistamines and corticosteroids. Antibiotics normally clear up an infection in a span of two weeks. But in the case of chronic sinusitis, it can take up to 28 days before antibiotics take full effect. As for antihistamines, they are sometimes used to avoid allergic reactions. However, antihistamines should be used with caution because they can lead to severe drying of the mucous membrane. For sinusitis cases confirmed by radiology or nasal endoscopy, treatment with corticosteroids alone or in combination with antibiotics is generally recommended.

For chronic or recurring sinusitis, the patient can seek the advice of an otolaryngologist, and treatment options may include nasal surgery. However, for a great majority of patients, surgery is not by any means superior to appropriate medication. Surgery should only be considered when symptoms do not respond to drug treatment over time or are the result of a nasal obstruction such as polyps.
