To make matters worse, most mangosteen juice is reconstituted from mangosteen concentrate back into a liquid. The process of making a product into concentrate includes many steps which destroy most of the nutritive benefits of the fruit. Often flavors and preservatives are added to allow the product an indefinite life once opened and the actual milligrams of active ingredient (the xanthones and anthocyanins in a whole bottle of mangosteen "health" juice) may be far less than what the average person would consume by eating 20 blueberries or blackberries per day.

Thailand and the Philippines are the worlds largest suppliers of mangosteen fruit and also one of the biggest users of pesticides in the South Asia region. Most of the pesticides are imported;
73% fall into the WHO hazard categories I:   Ia - extremely hazardous or  Ib - highly hazardous.
A further 33% are category II - moderately hazardous.

The three main insecticides used are the organophosphates monocrotophos, methamidophos, and methyl parathion, all of which contain carcinogens and other pathogens. Human consumption of these pathogens, over time, could result in various deadly diseases. 

Before you purchase a liquid mangosteen or any other mangosteen product for that matter, ask yourself this question:
"How clean is my mangosteen? "

The most nutritious part of the mangosteen is the pericarp (rind or skin) because of its rich xanthone content. Chemical pesticides sprayed on the mangosteen tree will contact the fruits, especially the skin. Determining how heavily sprayed the fruit is and what pesticides were used is often difficult because most companies get their pericarp from fruit canning companies. These companies can/bottle the pulp (white inner meat) and throw away the skin as “waste material,” which is then swept off the floor and sold to companies looking for pericarp. Since these large canning companies purchase their fruits from many different farms, the quality of the pericarp will be inconsistent. The cleanliness of the factory floors is also a concern since most of these canning operations are in third-world countries.

As part of its report on the financial success of company X’s product, the Associated Press commissioned the Linus Pauling Institute to analyze and compare the antioxidant capacity of the company's mangosteen juice. 

For the lab test, The Associated Press shipped a 750-milliliter bottle of product X to Oregon State University's Linus Pauling Institute at Corvallis. The institute measured its antioxidant strength against store-bought juices that sell for a few dollars a bottle.

On a scale of molecular weight, X's antioxidants measured 14,884 "micromoles" per liter, slightly higher than cranberry juice and lower than black cherry and less than half the power of blueberry juice.
